Context
Con Edison, the New York utility, had its employees spread across a sprawl of internal sites. With West Monroe as its consulting partner, it replaced them with one modern intranet, called Conor, on SharePoint, launched to employees in February 2018. West Monroe's case study describes the goal as bringing employees across the company's subsidiaries onto one platform where they can find what they need. By its count, the intranet serves 15,000 employees, the program cut more than 1,200 pages down to 120, and 76% of employees were using it daily a year after launch. The program kept going after that, and a later phase moved the platform onto Microsoft 365.
I joined West Monroe in June 2019 and came onto the program for that phase.
What I did
I was frontend lead on the Microsoft 365 phase, the program's move to Microsoft's cloud platform. I owned the frontend architecture for that migration and led the frontend build, in React and TypeScript on SharePoint.
The intranet already worked and people used it every day, so the job was to move it onto the new platform without breaking the paths people relied on to find things.
Result
In 2020, Nielsen Norman Group named Con Edison's intranet one of the year's ten best. That recognition belongs to the whole program, which started before I arrived.
The same years at West Monroe included the Coinbase NFT beta and setting up DevOps (GitHub Actions, Azure, CodeQL, Dependabot) across the repositories my teams worked in.
My part
The intranet first launched in February 2018, before I joined West Monroe, so I didn't build the original or run the page consolidation. The award and the figures belong to the whole program.
